4 steps to take control of your job search (Inspired by Atomic Habits)

Hi there,

Let me guess - you’ve been thinking about leaving your current job for months (maybe even years). You know you’re ready for something new, something better. But somehow, you’re still stuck.

Sound familiar? You’re not alone.

Most job seekers get caught in this same cycle: thinking about change but struggling to take action to make it happen. The good news? Finding a new job doesn’t have to be overwhelming.

Today, I’m sharing a four-step system inspired by Atomic Habits to help you take back control of your job search and move forward.

This newsletter is inspired by James Clear's Atomic Habits, a very practical book for anyone looking to create meaningful change in 2025. If you want to gain key insights from the book in less time, Shortform has you covered...

Shortform provides the highest quality summaries of Atomic Habits (and 1000+ other books) with chapter-by-chapter guides and actionable insights. It’s perfect for busy professionals like you who want to learn faster.

Ok let's create your 4-step job search system...

Step #1: Take one bold move

What’s the smallest job search action that could unlock your next big opportunity?

Most people think they need a perfect plan before starting their job search. The truth? You don’t need perfection - you just need a single action.

Here’s where most people get stuck: they confuse motion with action.

  • Motion: Researching companies that are hiring.
  • Action: Sending a tailored application to a company you’re excited about.
  • Motion: Making a list of people to connect with on LinkedIn.
  • Action: Messaging one person today to start a conversation.

Motion is important because it prepares you, but if you stop there, you won’t make progress. Progress happens when you act.

Big changes start with small steps:

  • Send a LinkedIn message to someone in your dream company.
  • Update one bullet point on your CV to reflect your latest win.

As James Clear says in Atomic Habits, “Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you want to become.”

What’s one action you can take today to start moving forward?

Step #2: Rewrite your story

How does changing the way you see yourself change the way others see you?

Here’s the thing: your identity drives your actions. If you think of yourself as “just stuck,” you’ll act like someone stuck. But if you shift how you see yourself, everything changes.

For example:

  • Instead of saying, “I’ve been at the same job for years,” say, “I’m now ready to bring my skills to a new challenge.”
  • Instead of thinking, “I’m bad at networking,” think, “I’m someone who builds meaningful connections every week.”

This isn’t just about words - it’s about becoming the person who takes action.

Here’s how to tie your new identity to a system:

  • Identity: I’m someone who builds a strong network.
  • System: Every Monday, I send 5 LinkedIn connection requests.

When your identity and actions align, you’ll start seeing results and your confidence will grow with each step.

The question to ask yourself is: Who do I need to become to land the role I want?

Step #3: Build unstoppable momentum

What habits will keep your job search on track, even when motivation fades?

Even with a goal and a system in place, life can easily get in the way. A busy schedule, a demanding boss, or sheer exhaustion can derail your progress if you rely solely on motivation.

The solution? Create a habit loop that makes taking action automatic, no matter how you feel.

Here’s how to set it up:

  • Make it obvious: Block time in your calendar - say, Monday and Thursday at 7 PM for job search activities.
  • Make it attractive: Pair the task with something you enjoy, like listening to your favorite playlist.
  • Make it easy: Start small by reaching out to someone you already know or applying to one role.

As James Clear writes in Atomic Habits, “Habits are the compound interest of self-improvement.” By building habits that drive your job search forward, you’ll create consistent progress - even on the toughest days.

Step #4: Celebrate every win

How can small rewards make your job search feel exciting instead of draining?

The job search can feel like a constant battle, especially when results aren’t immediate. But here’s the thing: progress becomes addictive when you associate it with something positive.

Celebrating small wins helps you stay motivated and builds momentum to keep going.

Here’s how to reward yourself along the way:

  • Sent an application? Treat yourself with a cup of coffee.
  • Got a response from a connection? Take a moment to recognize the progress—it’s a step closer to your goal.
  • Landed an interview? Share the win with a friend or mentor who’ll cheer you on.

Rewards don’t have to be big. The key is to acknowledge your effort and give yourself a reason to look forward to the next step.

As James Clear says in Atomic Habits, “The most effective way to change your habits is to focus not on what you want to achieve, but on who you wish to become.”

With every small celebration, you reinforce the identity of someone who takes action and gets closer to the job they deserve.

Your next step starts now

Taking control of your job search doesn’t need to be overwhelming. You can start with small, repeatable actions that add up over days.

So, what’s the one step you’ll take today?

Maybe you’ll update your resume. Maybe you’ll message someone new on LinkedIn. Whatever it is, make it small enough to do right now. Because every step forward gets you closer to the role you deserve.

PS: Reply to this email and share the one step you’re committing to this week. Accountability is a powerful thing.

Key takeaway: Big results start with small, consistent actions. Don’t wait for the perfect moment—start today.
